On Wednesday we spoke to the children about democracy to explain why we were going to be shut the next day as a polling station.
We discussed our country’s parliamentary democracy, the right to vote, the importance of the secret ballot and the history of voting prior to it being allowed to be secret.
We talked about the House of Commons and looked at how many MPs there are and what majority would be needed to form a government. (We did touch on hung parliaments very briefly!)
We discussed what a privilege it is to live in a country where ordinary people are given the regular opportunity to decide who is in charge.
